When I was a kid, I used to think what will I be in the future? Will I be a girl in white uniform? With hard hat? Holding a wooden spatula? Touring around the world? The woman behind the elegant houses in a classic subdivision? Or living and enjoying the serenity of the church?
As years passed, my thoughts have come to an end. My future is just at the tip of my fingernails. Time to decide. Then suddenly I think of mother. I want to be like her. The person whom we can turn to even if we have gray hair. The person with unending traits like these:
LOVING. Mother is the only person who can give unconditional love. A love with no return. A love so pure. Though she sets the rules at home, she can abruptly break them for you. Then as I think for my future career, I must not be too strict or too retiring. I must not view my class as a place to rule, rather, I should better help my students feel that they do have an equally essential role to play in the classroom.I should be concerned not only about the studies of the student, but their total well-being.
CARING. The woman on duty, twenty four hours a day in a week. No absent. No leave. No vacation. No holidays. Students can normally tell which teachers actually care about them – about them as people and about their learning. If a teacher doesn’t care about the students, the students will not get the education that they deserve. I should be able to appreciate the feelings and sentiments of the students when they are being taught. I should also be able to sense any other problems the students may be having outside the class.
RESPECTFUL. I do not ask for respect, I earn it. Kids want to respect you and when you express respect for them by giving them just and fair service they will respect you. Let them to have their own feelings, beliefs, and values but hold them responsible to treat you and each of their peers with positive ethical behaviors. Most of them share their emotions and insights in their studies and families. By doing it, I know the deep inside of them, and indeed I respect them and understand them more. In a classroom, each person’s ideas and opinions are appreciated. Students feel safe to express their feelings and learn to respect and listen to others.
Now, I am in an abode of young witty, talented and responsible youth, I know I already succeed from my career. I am sure I touched and molded them to be a genuine human being. I may not be as perfect as my mother, but close enough to those who want to be a teacher wanna be like me!
