Almost always teachers think of the most effective ways to use instructional materials and strategies in presenting their lessons in the classroom, this is worthy of commendation. Some teachers tend to concentrate much of their time on their lesson plans and techniques in discussing their everyday lessons. There is, however, a crucial factor for effective instruction that most educators fail to recognize. This factor is “classroom management.”

Most teachers, especially the beginning ones are not aware of the importance of classroom management.  According to Ivy F. Zara (2005), a well-managed classroom promotes several characteristics. First it encourage deep involvement with academic work among students. It also results to students being aware of what is expected of them, thus preventing frustrations among the members of the class. Moreover, there is relatively little wasted time, confusion and disruption in a well-managed classroom. The classroom is conducive to “serious” work and is relaxed and pleasant at the same time.

According to Fred Jones, the most widespread management technique at home and in the classroom is the nagging of parents and teachers. The discipline you, as a teacher, impose in a classroom does not comprise its management but is a small part of the process. In fact discipline concerns how you do not want your students to behave through prohibitions and penalties.

Classroom management is about procedures. These promote a step to be learned and concerns how things are done. Classroom procedures state what you expect of students for them to take place simultaneously and efficiently during the school day through procedures.
