One of the skills employers are looking for, nowadays in hiring a teacher, is ICT literacy. ICT literacy includes the info media technology and technological literacy. All teachers must possess this skill because our present generation is a digital generation, the so- called screenagers. A teacher is said to be ICT-literate if he/she can make the classroom similar to the outside world of digital technology for students. Their world-outside the classroom consists of cellphones, iphones, Ipad, Worldwide Web and others.. However, it’s ironic that students are betterin using the computer than teachers. A teacher has to be “digital native” not a digital immigrant. Effectively teaching the digital generation involves two basic things: embracing the technology that kids are immersed inand using these tools to engage in core curriculum topics. The point is, for the teacher not just to teach with technology but to use technology to convey content more powerfully and efficiently (de Rosen, 2011). How will the teacher use technology to deliver the subject matter more effectively and efficiently? The following are examples: history teachers use Google docs to share the point of view, science teachers use You tube videos to illustrate the different scientific phenomena. Music teachers create electronic note recognition games.
The older generation of teachers has no choice but to be parallel to the screenagers. Students are immersed with technologies that give them opportunities which the older generation had never enjoyed. The school and teachers have no choice but to respond to the demand of the digital generations. They have to be screen ager themselves too!
