The Civil Service Commission required every teacher in the government school to be a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education or any Bachelor degree + 18 education units, and must be a Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) passer (RA 1080).
Furthermore, if anyone wishes to be promoted to a higher position, one must possessed a Masteral or even better, a Doctoral degree, personal and or professional outstanding achievements will help a lot in anybody’s promotion.
A teacher’s job being to promote learning, supervise learning and record the class performance of each student. To research and create appropriate teaching methods for class/individual students to meet. The primary one being conductor of lessons of one or more national curriculum subjects to class.
A common class students of a Philippine secondary classroom ranges from 40 to 50 students ages 12 to 18 years old. A beginning teacher receives a salary of Php 19,077.00. Then, a teacher’s increase depends on his motivation to obtain post-graduate degrees and other personal and or professional outstanding achievements ( increase based on merit); and he can also receive increase base on his length of service ( step increments based on length of service).
A teacher’ s working hours, generally is six hours teaching and two hours paper work per day.(Magna Carta for Teachers). They have two months summer vacation with pay based on their service during the previous school year.
To be competent and effective teacher, teachers have to have skills and competency requirements:
- They need to have a sense of commitment and genuine love for teaching to be able to install love of learning to their students.
- They must be able to understand and address the need of individual differences of each student.
- They must be articulate, keen observer, effective leaders and creative.
- They should posses good organizational and time-management skills.
- Finally they must be Patient and with good sense of humor.
