Teaching kids about service is a serious part of their personal development. Whenever we educate them the value of service, we help them to see how their acts can make a positive contribution to their world and the people around them. Children can equate service tasks with the idea of having fun by demonstrating to them that service activities can be enjoyable and allowing them to use their interest and skills when serving others.
The following are some ways on how to teach children about service:
1. A teacher or a parent may give kids books that describe how service can help other people and make them feel good about themselves. This way will not just teach them the value of service, but at the same time it will help them to improve their reading skills!
2. Encourage kids to help others by performing an act of kindness. Allow them to do other activities such as washing the dishes, folding the laundry or doing the house chores. In simple ways, teach them the thoughtfulness of taking care of their grandmother and grandfather.
3. Take kids to a place which they can volunteer in their community. Ask them to join community events such as tree planting, cleaning of streets and the like.
4. For pupils who are ahead of their classmates, ask them to help tutor other kids who need help with homeworks or with other lessons.
Teaching children about service is essential as they take steps on becoming responsible citizens. What they have experienced as they were raised will surely have an effect on what they will become in the coming years.
