Jose Protacio Rizal Alonso y Realonda is our national hero, and most Filipinos know him. He can be found in one peso coin, a denomination of Philippine money that everyone has. During the celebration of Independence Day, every 12th of June, and Rizal Day every December 30, Filipinos commemorate the heroism, braveness, and martyrdom of this hero. His sacrifices and how he offered his life unselfishly are always remembered and valued. Local government units all over the Philippines hold programs and celebrations with a certain theme yearlyNo wonder, Jose Rizal is the most admired and most famous Philippine hero in history.

In school, teachers are tasked to introduce to the young Filipinos our heroes who fought against the invaders for us to achieve our liberty. The lives of Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, Francisco Dagohoy, Gabriela Silang to name a few are again and again being told to the students to make them aware of the past and the heroism of these heroes. But always one hero stood among all, and that is Dr. Jose Rizal.

In the high school, college, and universities in the Philippines, the life, works, and writings of Rizal are being taught. The ever famous novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are included in Filipino subjects during high school. Several months are allotted for these subjects so students would have a full glimpse of Rizal’s life and everything about him. At college, again Rizal’s life is integrated into the curriculum.

What is the significance of studying the life, works, and writings of Rizal in schools? In this modern age, is it still necessary to study this past hero considering that there are a lot of modern heroes worth knowing?

Teaching the lives and works of Rizal to the students indeed will help them inculcate in themselves the good traits that Rizal had. The course about Rizal is a good channel to instill nationalism and patriotism among the students.

No matter how modern we are now, teaching all about Dr. Rizal should always be a part of the curriculum as his story is truly inspiring and learners shouldn’t forget our national hero. Every Filipino-born individual should know our national hero, the great impact he contributed to our history and to our independence. Rizal subject and course should remain an integral part of the curriculum.
