Children need to know the basic addition and multiplication facts very well or they will have difficulties with fractions, decimals, etc. These facts need to be known by heart.
One of the best ways to start children with Math is to have them skip count up and down from a very young age.
1. Use manipulatives and pictures in your teaching. Almost all mathematical concepts can be illustrated with pictures which can even take a place of concrete manipulative. If you can condition your children to draw lots of pictures when studying fractions they can learn to visualize fractions as pies.
2. In Geometry, have your children draw a lot.
3. Involve your pupils when you measure, count money and check the time.
While it is true that Mathematics can be difficult and confusing, it can be made much simpler if it is taught in the right way and with proper attitude. As a teacher, remember that your attitude toward the subject will be evident to students and negative attitudes will often be transferred to students.
Approach the subject with eagerness, and your students will be more likely to follow your lead.
