Every teacher has a unique style of interacting with students. He/She has his or her own preferences of doing things.

Many authorities in education believe thatmore students will benefit when teachers use various strategies, methods, approaches that allow students to learn, increasing willingness to learn, providing a new perspective which can lead to greater skill acquisition.

The National Foundation Survey(2000) reveals why many are attracted to join the teaching profession.  Some of the reasons given are: this is a noble profession, they want to be an instrument in raising the achievement level of the students, another reason is to improve their craftand still another one is to increase knowledge both of teachers and students teaching and learning situation,

According to education authorities the teachers teaching styles and personalities affect the learning of the students.  They also identified some teaching styles that show great influence  to the students achievement    As Stronge ( 2004)  puts it there are five teaching styles that are exhibited by teachers in the classroom:

  1. The Authoritarians.  These are the teachers that possess status among students because of knowledge and role as a faculty member.  They are concerned with providing positive and negative feedbacks, establishing learning goals, expectations, and rules of conduct for students.  They are concerned with the correct, acceptable and standard ways to do things and providing students with the structure they need to learn.
  2. The Delegators. Theseare the teachers who are concerned with developing students’ capacity to learn and function in autonomous fashion.  Students work independently on projects or as a part of autonomous teams.  The teacher is available at the request of students as a resource person.  Marzano (2004)
  3. The Experts. Theseare the teachers that possess knowledge and expertise that students need. They strive to maintain status as an expert among students to enhance their competence.  Concerned with transmitting information and ensuring that students are well-prepared.   Corpuz and Salandanan (2007)

     4)  The Facilitators. These are the teachers that emphasize the personal nature of teacher-student interactions.  These teachers guide and direct students by asking questions, exploring options, suggesting alternatives and encouraging them to develop criteria to make informed choices.  Overall goal is to develop in students the capacity for independent action, initiative and responsibility.  Works with students on projects in a consultative fashion and tests to provide4 as much support and encouragement as possible.

5).The Permissives. These are the teachers who establish few rules and is inconsistent in enforcing rules or applying consequences for misbehavior.  In this kind of classroom-management style numerous disciplinary problems arise.

Now, teachers which Teaching Style are you engage into?  You can analyze which style you are into, then you make necessary adjustments for the betterment of teaching-learning situations.
