When education comes to fore, there are certain factors which must be considered to ascertain that education is serving its purpose.  How a teacher sticks to these factors is essential in the realization of the objectives of education.  And these can be summarized into the three (3) essential R’s of Education.

  • REALITY.  Education must always be based on the truth.  It cannot divorce itself from what is true.  Doing so will defeat the very purpose of education.  And that is to discover the truth.  So, education must always stick to the reality of everything.  It has to veer away from the falsity of things.  A teacher needs to verify the veracity of the lessons before it can be imparted into the young minds of the pupils.  Truth must always be central to the delivery of education.

  • REFERENCE.  Education should be based on what the pupils need.  Therefore,  a teacher must always remember that lessons need to be based on what the pupils need to know and not on what he knows.  In imparting knowledge, a teacher must always refer to the demand of the level he is handling.  A teacher cannot force the pupil to master the multiplication table if he is handling Grade 1 pupils.  Progression is the key to this.  Always refer to what the pupil is capable of absorbing.

  • RESPECT.  There must be mutual respect between the teacher and the pupils.  A teacher cannot achieve the real purpose of education without respecting the feelings of the pupils.  Lessons cannot be forced on them if they are not in the right mood to absorb the lessons.  Teachers must learn how to contain the learning attention of the pupils.  Likewise, pupils must be respectful of their teachers.  At an early age, pupils should recognize the efforts of the teachers and give them due respect for what they are doing.

The 3 R’s of education may be simple, but definitely, they are essential in the attainment of the goals of education.  And for education to serve its purpose, it must always be based on truth, with reference to the needs of the child and developing respect at both ends.
