The most common problem a new teacher face is the poor classroom management. Classroom management is not yet teaching but it is a pre-requisite to teaching. It provides a more conducive environment for both teaching and learning process to be effective.
In the book of James H. Stronge, “ Qualities of Effective Teacher”, he cited principles of classroom management:
- 1.PRO-ACTIVE DISCIPLINE- As teachers, we must establish rules and policies to all students. We must do what we preach. We must be pro-active in our approach to discipline. We should not wait for disciplinary problems to occur. It better to prevent it than resolve its effect.
- 2.ROUTINES FOR DAILY TASKS AND NEEDS- Orderly manner is the result of an established routine procedures. It provides orderly learning environment and maximum use of student-teacher contact time. Training our students how to pass papers, collect assignments, fall in line and other activities make our students discipline.
- 3.CONTINUITY OF MOMENTUM- Lull moments breed classroom restlessness. Time is the essence. Teachers must utilize this resource wisely and with continuity. Boredom may result to disciplinary problem too.
- 4.VARIETY IN STUDENTS ACTIVITIES- Every learner is a genius on his or her own. Multiple intelligences should be understood by teachers. Teaching styles and learning styles can affect the behavior of the learners.
- 5.BE AWARE OF ALL ACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES- Teachers should have “eyes on the back of their head”. We must be aware of what is happening inside our classroom at all times.
