A teacher can teach using chalk and chalkboard alone, and he/she can make the students learn from doing so. Teachers may also label the latter materials as the ever-reliable and their “forever” when it considering it as an aid in teaching. However, as the generations change, can we assume that the time-tested chalk and chalkboard are still the best teaching materials that teachers use?

The massive outbreak of technology changed people’s lifestyle; the way we act, the way we move, the way we appreciate things. When teachers teach the technological natives, there are times when they get bored when fed up traditional teaching materials. This situation posted a new demand for teachers, and that is to incorporate technology in teaching the students.

Seeing teachers who use LCD projectors featuring the slides of their PowerPoint presentation is not an unusual sight nowadays. Those are just teachers coping with the changing demands of the classroom that they are managing. There are even some teachers who use-mail addresses or social media as a platform for their requirements.

Looking on the general perspective, we cannot really deny the fact that up to this day and age, our teaching is still tremendously supported by the ‘chalk and chalkboard’ instructional material. The chalk is still the most used weapon held by teachers – especially in places where the chalkboard is the only available material.

However, teachers should always strike a balance between the instructional materials that they use. If teachers will not be successful in offering a wide variety of strategies, the students will surely be bored in their subject and that will not help in the motivation of the learners toward the lesson.

Moreover, applying technology makes teachers explore new boundaries and apply more novelty in the instructional materials. It is true that we can never (not soon in the future) replace the chalk and chalkboard and we can never assume that there is one BEST instructional material but what teachers should bear in mind is that instructional materials should aid learning, and be of the interest of the learners themselves. If the students are bored with the materials that the teacher is offering, then that is not an effective material.
