Do you known that many pupils with disabilities are successfully learning and joining in the same classroom with their friends and neighbors who are not disabled? Inclusion is possible for ALL learners, including YOUR child. The key to success for inclusion is to have a positive outlook, build the services and supports necessary to insure a good program.
Do:
1. Educate all children with disabilities in regular classroom regardless of the nature of their disabling
conditions.
2. Provide all students enhanced opportunities to learn from each other’s contributions.
3. Provide necessary services within the regular schools.
4. Support regular teachers and administrations by providing time, training, teamwork, resources and
strategies.
5. Have pupils disabilities follow the same schedules as non-disabled pupils.
6. Involving pupils with disabilities in age appropriate academic classes and extracurricular activities,
including art, music, gym, field trips, assemblies and graduation exercises.
7. Pupils with disabilities using school cafeteria, library, playground, and other facilities with non-disabled
students.
8. Encouraging friendships between non-disabled and disabled pupils.
9. Pupils with disabilities receiving their education and job training in regular community environment when
appropriate.
10. Teach all children to understand and accept human differences.
11. Place children with disabilities in the same schools they would attend if they did not have disabilities.
12. Take parents concern seriously.
13. Provide an appropriate individualized educational program.
Don’t:
1. “Dump” pupils with disabilities into regular programs without preparation or support.
2. Provide special education services in separate or isolated places.
3. Ignore children’s individual needs.
4. Jeopardize pupil’s safety or well-being.
5. Place unreasonable demands on teachers and administrators.
6. Ignore parents concerns.
7. Isolate pupils with disabilities in regular schools.
8. Place pupils with disabilities in school or classes.
