It has been a practice that a teacher and other school personnel whether non – teaching or teaching to be evaluated in terms of the degree to which she or he conformed to some pre conceived standard of what a good worker should do. In order to achieve such objective, check list, and other rating scales that contain more or less detailed lists of the desired traits, methods, conditions and outcomes were employed in an attempt to render sound and quality judgment.
From the point of view, whether it involves the appraisal of a single teacher, a method of instruction, or the overall effectiveness of the school’s total program, the fundamental aim of evaluation is “change for the better”. Evaluation gives emphasis its value as self – improving process of creative learning that is beneficial both as to the evaluator and its respondents. Because its end result could serve as springboard to the attainment of school’s vision and mission towards sustainable school best performance.
The importance of evaluation can be summarized as follows;
- Evaluation in guiding teaching and learning. It reveals the specific points of strengths and weaknesses. By knowing its strengths and weaknesses, we are enabled to plan more intelligently for its improvement.
- Evaluation aids in devising more effective materials and procedures of instruction. Current educational literature is filled with enthusiastic advocacy of various types of teaching materials and teaching procedures. The results of cooperative research work along this line will determine the degree of success and effectiveness of evaluation.
- Evaluation help provides objective evidence for effective cooperation between parents and teachers. The increasing complexity of society has emphasized the importance of cooperation of the home, the school and the community in making a significant educational progress. Evaluation will fail to achieve its purpose without a parent – teacher organization that permits and keeps open the channels of communication.
- Evaluation can be used to enforce external standards upon individual school. The method of evaluation should be such as to encourage a flexible curriculum ever responsive to the changing needs of modern life and to variations of in local conditions.
- Evaluation helps translate the results into improved policies and practices.
