GEOGRAPHY which deals with areal differential of the earth surface is one subject matter in

high schools that is seemingly taken for granted by many students nowadays. And to some extend

some educators themselves have to refresh themselves with geography.

I have witnessed in several instances where a student or a high school graduate for that  matter  who is quite poor in geography during a quiz show on national TV to the dismay of televiewers and the

program host as well.

For instance , students make the mistake of referring Cagayan Valley as located in Mindanao

When we know for a fact  it is located in Northern Luzon. Perhaps he was confused with the “Cagayan”

And what  was in mind was the Cagayan de Oro which is in Mindanao.

In another case , a radio reporter or shall we say many media practitioners for that matter often refer to Bicol as a province . That fact is a region composed of at least six provinces.

Still another case , a desk editor sent his correspondent to cover a news event in Batanes when

the news correspondent was permanently based in Bataan province. Obviously , the editor had mistaken Bataan for Batanes. There was this confusion because of poor knowledge of local geography.

I think our colleagues in the teaching  profession should also be aware of this reality. It’s quite

embarrassing for anyone to be ignorant of your geography right in your own backyard.
