School children are the core and the center of the all the teaching and learning processes within and outside the four corners of the classroom. These children develop their prime learning at the very foundations of education – the elementary and secondary school.
Schools are at all times responsible for the basic learning that every child needs as they grow and become their own individuals.
Teachers and other school figures and the total school environment supplement and complement the learning activities every day.
However, it should also be noted that the progress and development of every child does not solely depend on the teachers and the school environment.
The home – the family, especially the parents will always have that great part and impact in developing the child.
The parents, then, need to be supportive of their child’s learning habits, study skills and the application of classroom learning into the practicalities of life. The mother and the father will have to intensify all the values and skills learned and gained at school in order to make learning practical and to make their child not just school smart but street smart as well – not the likes of a Kabisote who knows how to read but does not understand what he reads; who knows how to add or subtract but doesn’t know if the change after buying something from the store is enough.
Parents also need to support their children at school by constantly checking up how their child performs at school, meets the teacher/adviser when called for a meeting and goes to school or contacts the teacher if their child will be absent from class.
It seems today that some parents do not mind these things at all that they seem to care less or are just too busy that they do not have enough time to find out how the son or daughter behaves at school, how the child participates in class and how the child progresses during the school year.
There is still a great need for parent support at school – not just in material or monetary contributions but more so, in their child’s education and development.
