“ Reading is to mind what exercise is to the body”. Reading introduces new people, new ideas, new events into life, and boredom is a stranger to the new, exciting things. A man may as well expect to grow stronger by always eating as wiser by always reading.
But why do we really need to read? “Reading sweeps the cobwebs away”. What does it mean? Reading enhances thinking, it stretches and strains our mental muscles. It clobbers our brittle, narrow, intolerant opinions with new ideas and strong facts. It stimulates growing up instead of growing old. “Read not to contradict or confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.
In other words, reading expands us, It scratches those itches down deep inside. It navigates us through virgin territory we would not otherwise explore. According to C. Neil Strait, a famous writer, “ The hours spent in reading are investment in tomorrow”. For reading sends us into the future with great reservoir of knowledge from which we can draw at various times “ An intelligent reader is a type of reader whose aim in reading is to acquire greater acquiantance with facts. His utmost desire is to learn about things and he treasures books because of the accuracy of information they contain.
To become a good reader, authorities on reading suggest the following pointers:
Maintain a healthful routine. When you read you are in good physical condition. Do not strain your eyes reading in poor light. When reading, avoid unnecessary distraction. Most persons find it easier to read in an atmosphere of quiet, away from disturbing sights and sounds. Have a clear objective for your reading. Why do you read? Ask questions while you’re reading reach out for the answers. Get into the habit of reading widely
Find time to discover the richness of reading. Books are legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation, as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn. Reading can make you rich in mind and soul.
Try reading. You’ll enjoy it!
