One of the most controversial matters in the study of Science is the theory on how we humans evolve. In the Bible, it is stated that God created us out of dusts. Many Christians and Catholics take this as the truth, however Science begs to disagree. According to research and studies, we humans evolved from apes or monkeys. This is the most famous theory we can see in our science textbooks on which we use to discuss to our students. This idea is based on the theory of the English geologist, naturalist, and biologist Charles Robert Darwin. What exactly is this theory of his and what more can we learn from it?
According to Charles Darwin’s theory, evolution transpires because of natural selection. Natural selection is the process where living organisms adapt to their environment in order for them to survive the harshness of nature. As they adapt, these organisms undergo changes and these changes are inherited by their offspring which now led to the conclusion of evolution.
Darwin first came up with this theory because of his love of studying animals and plants. Particularly, the theory began when he studied 15 species of finches or passerine birds. He noticed that the birds were a lot similar to each other, the only difference they have is the shape of their beaks. He then realized that the beaks match the food type available on the habitat of each finch. Finches with skinny and pointed beaks tend to live in a place where insects are dominant. With those kinds of beaks they can easily pick up and eat those insects. Meanwhile, birds with sharp beaks live in places where fruits grow a lot. Sharp beaks will help them cut through the skin fruits thus making it their main food supply. Darwin called this a “survival of the fittest”. These finches probably survive because the nature they live in selects them. As time goes by, these birds will pass the trait to their offspring and they will naturally survive in their environment. Meanwhile, those who do not have the capability to live on such environment will probably die, simply because the nature did not choose them.
Through the theory of evolution, Darwin then suggested that humans came from apes as we share a lot of things common with them. As time goes by, more scientists have continued to further study this idea by Darwin. More and more evidences such as fossils and genetic mutation came to light. Some studies even said that there are around 95-98% similarities are found between humans and monkeys. We can clearly see it in physical appearances and movements as well.
As someone who believes in scientific facts, I will say that this theory is close to the truth. It might not be fully proven but with such proofs all I can do is to believe and ponder even more. Well, at the end of the day whether we believe on it or not, we are all responsible to share this knowledge to much more curious young ones.
