Education in the twenty-first century has, for the past fifteen years, benefited from the interventions and innovations made in the past century.
From curriculum development, the delivery of instruction and assessment of learners, technological marvels can be used to perform these processes with never before realized with such ease and accuracy.
Word processing applications, the main workhorse software in many activities like general writing, creating syllabi, and academic handouts and examination papers, are versatile tools for generating reusable text and no text data. Spreadsheets can be programmed to perform tedious numeric and logic calculations, record and compute student grades.
Presentation software are mainly used in classrooms to communicate ideas and present graphics like animations that facilitates learning and further enhances understanding of concepts. Education managers convey policies and procedures through this type of software.
There are other software that are either for customizable to suit the needs of both teacher and student.
Most classrooms are now equipped with multimedia projectors projecting computer-based content on white screens that has relieved the traditional blackboard of some of its use. Libraries are now expanded with the addition of books in electronic form, documents are archived in removable media like portable hard drives, flash disks and optical disks. It is now possible to locate any indexed library holding (books, term papers, theses, journals and other publications) through a library’s database management system.
While technology has improved the provision of educational resources, the role of educator must not be underestimated and the adoption of use of technology and techniques for more effective and efficient delivery of instruction to students should be the norm, rather than viewed as an obstacle.
