Teaching sciences has been a major stand of any educational institutions around the globe from time immemorial up to date of pandemic and even to the future. It covers not only the finding and learning of facts, but also the inculcating of essential values transpired during the experimenting, discovering and learning process.
There is an inherent link between sciences, technology, and social values. Nevertheless, scientific research has been a focus of the government to produce results important to economy, industry, and governance. That is why there is budget allotment for science related undertakings that can benefit the general public as a whole. However, recently, science related movements have been questioned for its sincerity, credibility and honesty to truly provide significant change and remedy for the people. There is a question on whether these science related endeavors are bind with corruption and exploitation by those concerned individuals who are more after what they can get more than what they should do. In this manner, scientists and doctors’ images are being shambled because they are the front liners in these activities, and as a science teacher, who hopes that someday my students will be one of us teachers, doctors, scientists and the like, I am very much blue.
With all the things happening, I believe there is power in one’s willingness to help and be an instrument. I am always more interested in the moral values of science, because while money Is always necessary to do scientific research and experiments, the value of science, its degree of truth, cannot be measured only by its financing.
I always teach my students that science looks for the truth through demonstration, experiments, and rationality of proof. Hence, they must be honest in their researches and experiments to have reliable and valid results. Especially now that we are in the middle of pandemic, students are very prone to falsifying documents and dishonesty in performance tasks.
I firmly believe that education is a prime learning experience not only for knowledge, skills and competencies, but more so for values, which are very important to being life-long learners. Teaching science is truly a great gateway to imbibe values towards a more honest and progressive society.
