The primary concern of Filipino parents is giving proper education to their children whatever their station in life. They will do everything at their best to earn just to send their children to school.
The government provides the best possible education to its citizen. Filipino parents put so much value on education them in remote villages in the archipelago, it is not uncommon to see school children hiking across hills and valleys for hours just to attend their classes in barangays where there are public schools. Even in areas where there are sporadic armed conflicts , students risk life and limb to get a formal education.
Almost 21 million elementary and high schools students and 2.5 million college students in both private and public schools all over the country “ burn the eyebrows”, so to speak , to boost our literacy rate further.
But the ability to read and write is not real indicators for one to be considered literate. This must be complemented by the facility to think critically and intelligently, specially on issues that affect the lives of our people.
Literate people are vital factors in the progress and growth of the nation. It is a strong guarantee that the country will survive. The classroom, the home and practically every place can be vitalized as working laboratory to foster literacy among our people.
It is imperative that the country pursues quality education to promote personal growth of its citizens and ensure national progress in the midst of global conflicts and severe health problems besetting the region. With the adoption of reforms in education and related areas, the Philippines can truly become a country of educated and highly skilled people ready to face the challenges today and the coming days that is the future .
And further considering the values of education in nation-building, the Department of Education has been persistently implementing the K-12 program of our basic education.
With this program, graduates of the K-12 can be able to find a job that is fitted for their skills.
It is noteworthy, therefore, for all parents to give their full support to K-12 program as this program of education will rebound to the benefit of our youth.
