The big challenge for teachers is not simply getting kids to read – it’s getting them to enjoy it too.  It seems that there are so many competing activities and new technologies for kids these days that make it a challenge for parents and teachers to encourage the kids to read, and even then, to teach to love to read.

Here are some tips that you can help your children learn to enjoy reading.

  • Read to your child every day.
  • Ask the child questions before, during, and after reading.
  • Let the child see you reading.
  • Read a variety of books and make a game out of guessing the genre.
  • Look for letters while out and about and in the environment around you.
  • Have fun rhyming.
  • When teaching letters and letter sounds, incorporate as many senses as possible.
  • Work on letter sounds and manipulating them with words (phonemic awareness).
  • Encourage the child to sound out short words (consonant, vowel, consonant).
  • Practice memorizing a few sight words each day.
  • Most of all, Have fun together!
