A lot of pupils regard science as a difficult and an uninteresting subject. But in reality it is not. You as a teacher could change that belief of many pupils about the Science subject. As an intermediate science teacher for almost ten years now, I had proven these practices in teaching the subject effective to make pupils enjoy while learning the science concepts.
The first thing you should do is to refrain from using the traditional method of teaching which is the blackboard chalk and manila paper lecturing. The use of ICT in teaching will really help a lot. Using power point presentations or videos will catch their attention. ICT integration is now the latest trend in teaching especially under the new curriculum.
Always prepare experiments and activities on your daily teaching. This will help your pupils to learn the concepts by doing. The different science process skills will be learned by them through experiments and activities. At the same time, they will learn the value of cooperation in group work. This will add up to their excitement and enthusiasm in your class. But always be reminded that experiments and activities should always be checked and share to the class the findings and observation of each group. If not, children will tend to lose their interest in performing.
Another technique that I had proven effective is the giving of research work. Research work will make them learn new concepts in science. You will see their eagerness in class if they had discovered new knowledge about the concepts you had thought to them. By doing so, your pupils will be benefited by the new information. Not only them, but you as a teacher also. There are information found in the internet which are not printed on the books we are using as reference in teaching.
Learn also to construct and use improvised science materials so that you could go on with your lesson and deliver them with complete instructional aids. The lack of supply in science equipments in our school should not be a reason for teachers not to teach a particular lesson in science. We as teachers are creative and resourceful. We should find ways to make our own improvised materials so that we could teach the concept to the pupils well. Teaching without using the appropriate materials will only be a waste of time.
For pupils who are slow learners and find it difficult to cope up with the lessons and even for those frequently absent to class, we could employ the use of modules or the self -instructional materials which they could use and learn by themselves. But you should see to it that the module you will use are containing the accurate information about the lesson. In this way, pupils will have the chance to understand the concepts well and will also be able to check his understanding on the activities and exercises recorded on the modules.
These are some of the many ways a teacher could do in teaching Science. Always bear in mind that the pupils understanding on what we are teaching lies on how you deliver it to them. Observing all the good qualities of a Science teacher will truly make you effective educator to your pupils.
