Classroom is like a TV network that showcases many different kinds of programs – drama, action, love story and comedy.
This is where all sorts of life’s drama happen.
The classroom tends to be an unexpected comedy stage. While you are teaching intently or discussing something seriously hoping that you can make the lessons come across, there could be times when pupil’s innocent answers can become comedic punch lines.
I was teaching my class suffixes and came to suffix –ic. I gave examples like poetic, heroic and nationalistic. I asked my pupils to give examples and some gave good answers until I find someone gave patriotic……elastic….and biogesic……!!!! What????
I taught synonyms and antonyms. There were sensible answers. However, when I asked for the synonym of smart, a pupil answered me with… GLOBE!!!
Antonym of honest…..and a pupil answered…….TOMAS!!!! If you are from Abucay, you would know that there’s a school named ANES (Abucay North Elem. School) and TOMAS for T.Pinpin Memorial Elementary School)..so upon hearing it, he said that the antonym of honest (ANES) was TOMAS (TPMES).
I drew a staff with a G-clef, I asked the class what it was and a pupil immediately answered PEDESTRIAN LANE….Really? He even thought about a pedestrian lane despite the G-clef!
What is the meaning of WEAKNESS…and my pupil answered…. “Linggo-linggo may sakit.”
I asked for the substance in the hair that makes it black (which we discussed a few days earlier) and the pupil answered….SEMEN….What??? semen is in the hair?
Innocent answers??? Playful answers???? Pilosopo Tasyo answers???? Who knows where pupils get their answers?
So, a classroom is really full of many different emotions on different times of the day during school hours.
A teacher may be suspected to be having bipolar syndrome – because one moment, the teacher may be laughing and the next moment he could be shouting angrily. And why not?
Many different classroom situations are conducive to many conflicting emotions so all we just have to do is to admit that the classroom is really like a TV network…..whether it’s KAPUSO, KAPAMILYA, KAPATID, the classroom is more than just a network….it is a home where people can live together; learn together and have fun together in the most unexpected situations.
