Ways Principals Motivate Their Teachers

In order to have a happy and motivated school, it is crucial to have happy and motivated teachers and staff. There are  so many ways for principals to show their appreciation to the teaching staff. Just a small gesture can sometimes be the boost of motivation that the teacher needs in her day.

Be involved. Principals can be a part of the classroom by occasionally coming in to spend quality time with the children. By doing, this, the principal is not only making herself available so the students but it is also seeing what the teacher sees on daily basis. This is a good exercise to do if there is particular recurring problem in the classroom.

Be an effective communicator. Always talk to your staff openly and honestly. Most occasional informal get-togethers in effort to discuss situations and upcoming events. Always be sure that the entire staff is included when holding this type of meeting. If a teacher or staff member is not present for the discussion, be sure to meet with him individually afterwards. Never leave the responsibility of communication to someone else.

Hold contests. Throughout the school year, hold fun-filled contests to encourage the teachers to work for a prize such as “best Classroom Décor”. Just like the students, when teachers are motivated to win a prize, they will tend to work harder and more efficiently.

Assign fun jobs for the teachers to do in their spare time, such as photography or bulletin board decorating. When you find a teacher’s natural talent, use to give her temporary break from the daily routine of her classroom.

Attend workshops. Encourage your teachers to attend trainings and workshops that promote motivation and hands-on activities. No one wants to sit in a seminar all evening, so be sure that when you schedule trainings, they are fun and lively.

Host a teacher appreciation banquet. Host an appreciation banquet each year for the teachers and school families. Acknowledge an accomplishment for each teacher and handout rewards for a job well done.

Be an advocate for the teachers. Approach the school board for a teacher bonus and raise each year. The teaching staff will appreciate you for the effort, even if the request is not granted.
