In developing the child’s reading comprehension, the teacher can make use of various effective approaches which follow:

Establish connections.

You should connect what your child already knows while he/she reads sharpens his/her focus and deepens understanding.  Teach how to make connections by sharing your own connections as you read aloud. For example, the book mentions places to spend time for vacation. They talk about the memories of their own vacation. Invite the pupils to share related experiences. Tell them that good readers make all kinds of connections as they read.

Instill questions.

Include questions that will make your child discover clues in the text. Ask questions that will stimulate the learner’s curiosity as he/she reads aloud. Tell the pupil that good readers test what they’re reading by asking questions.

Generate “mind movies.”

Create visual images that bring the text alive. The “mind movies” make the story more memorable. You can help your pupil do this by reading aloud and letting him/her use imagination. They should use all their senses and emotions.

Develop inferences.

Infer by combining what we already know about a story. You can help your child with this reading skill by predicting or prophesizing what might happen in the story based on the events that transpired.

Work out what’s important.

Determine what’s important after reading the text.  Teach the child to identify story elements. Keep track of the main characters, where the story is taking place, and the problem and solution of the story. Nonfiction texts are different from fiction.

Monitor comprehension.

Teachers should monitor the pupils’ comprehension with the use of strategies to help them when they don’t understand something. Include effective ways to address their diverse abilities.
