Many children experience failure and frustration in school. It is not because they lack ability but because they do not have adequate study skills. Good study habits are important for success in school now and especially in the future.
Here are some ways how to improve study habits of a child.
a. Make it Routine – study in the same place, same time on a set schedule. If you get your child to sit down and go through their homework every day at the same time, then they are less likely to complain. Even if there is no affected homework, there is always something to refresh or practice.
b. Be Organized and Have Plan – A planner can help a child to keep everything organized and review items in the planner.
c. Set Goals – studying with a purpose makes it a little easier. Even if the reward is simple, the little prizes help motivate smaller children until it just becomes a habit.
d. Track Progress – Everyone likes to see if they’re improving. Keep track of grades, test, scores and praise improvements. When they see that, they may be more willingly to sit down without the nightly lecture.
e. Think Positively – Being in the right mindset can makes all the different. Encourage the students to think positively when studying or heading into an exam and by all means, avoid catastrophic thinking.
f. Have a Break – Children and learning to lengthen attention span but still need time to relax, just like everybody else.
g. Limit Destructions – To help the student stay focused, make sure the area they study is in quiet.
h. Create a Study Group – Working in groups can help students when they’re struggling to understand a concept and can enable them to complete assignments or projects more quickly than when working alone.
Without good study habits a student cannot succeed. To succeed, students must be able to appropriately assimilate course, content, digest it, reflect on it and be able to articulate that information in written and oral form.
