Teachers feel the stress of overcrowded classrooms, administrative demands and mandated testing. Many teachers, however, rise above the odds. What keeps these educators coming back for more? Although each teacher brings her own strengths to the profession, a common thread of positive qualities typically surfaces.

Sense of Humor

Effective teachers laugh with the students every day — it lightens the mood. Teachers who take themselves too seriously are not well received by students. Students learn a lesson in character building from teachers who can laugh at themselves once in a while.

Flexibility

Adaptability is an important key in teaching. Sometimes a lesson doesn’t go as planned, and the teacher must make adaptations on the spot. He comes to recognize which strategies work with his students, and he teaches to their strengths.

Reflective Thinking

An adept teacher consistently monitors her students, materials and methods to determine which lessons worked and which ones need to be altered. She searches for new techniques that will enhance her teaching and then makes the necessary changes to her lesson plan, delivery or assessment.

Passion

Students quickly recognize whether their teacher enjoys his job. They are motivated when his thirst for knowledge assures them he is a lifelong learner. They are inspired when he shows enthusiasm regarding the subject matter. A passionate teacher never gives up on any student.

Sensitivity

Successful teachers make each boy and girl feel important. They are tuned in to their students’ specific needs and possible roadblocks to education. They show compassion regarding issues both inside and outside the classroom. In addition, they are receptive to the needs of students’ parents as advocates of their children’s education.

Patience

Boys and girls learn at different rates and depths. A teacher often has to explain a concept many times and in various ways before understanding is achieved. New students are continually being added to the roster, and inclusion laws result in teachers being responsible for a diversity of learners. It can be overwhelming and requires endurance.

Command of Material

An educator is well prepared and knowledgeable in his subject matter. He continually researches and stays abreast of the latest developments in his field. Still, he’s not afraid to admit that he doesn’t always know it all.

Classroom Manager Skill

Even if a teacher is a master at his craft, students won’t learn in an unruly environment. An undisciplined classroom takes a toll on teacher and students alike. Effective teachers have strong discipline plans in place and are consistent in their administration.
