Some leaders mean well. They want things get done. However, they need to be careful on delivering their message. Insensitive remarks drive away good people and that will result in something negative, socially and personally.
Here are some things which good leaders should never say:
- “That’s a no-brainer.” Beware and be fair. Every creature has a brain. What if you say, “Oh, I was also thinking about that too…”
- “You need to work smarter, not harder.” Think of a more respectful way to say that one needs to think carefully and the work in a more creative manner.
- “Just make it happen.” This remark means condescension and laziness. Ask how you can be of help and provide guidance on how to get the task done.
- “I don’t want to hear any excuses.” This puts the person in the corner and conveys readiness to accuse and blame when things do not go as expected.
- “I’ve got my eyes on you.” You’re not a secret agent leave the threat out of the conversation.
The phrases may be funny, but there are leaders who use such sophomoric phrases to people in the schools. And such is not advisable because of the responsibility expected of a leader. Leadership is a matter of the heart. It’s both an art and science that need to be developed and educated.
