It is said that learning is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes and ideals resulting in the progressive adaptation and modification of conduct and behavior. It is the main purpose of education. It is primarily the pupils’ responsibility whereas, educators’ responsibility is teaching.
Educators can facilitate learning but in different intensity. There are teachers who perform their duties and responsibilities based on standards. They display basic level of work and performance outputs as required outcomes or expectations of the job. But there are also teachers who exceed expectations and display a high level of competency related to skills, abilities, initiatives and productivity. These are effective and efficient teachers that provide better learning. The question is what makes up better learning?
Learning is an active process. Pupils should be actively engaged in the learning process. Remember the famous quote? “What I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember. What I do, I understand.”
In addition, the more senses that are involved in learning, the more and the better the learning. What is seen and heard is learned more than what is just seen or just heard. The use of the combination of three or more senses or the so-called multi-sensory aids is highly suggested.
Another thing to remember is that a non-threatening atmosphere enhances learning. It is not only a function of the physical condition of the classroom but more a function of the psychological climate that prevails in the classroom.
Indeed, there are a number of factors to consider enhancing learning. Since it is our responsibility, why not walk an extra mile and endow with better learning?
