The teachers usually give assignments to further surge the learning abilities of learners. But, it seems homework for students could only be a memory in the history.
Congressman Alfred Vargas desires to implement House Bill 388 commonly known as “No Homework on Weekends Act of 2019″.
The proposed law pursues to prohibit all elementary and high schools from permitting educators to give homework or assignments throughout weekend. If teachers violate the bill, in return, penalty of P50,000 and imprisonment of up to 2 years awaits them.
Vargas quoted a 2018 study of a public school in Western Cape province in South Africa which stated “that homework is a burden for children and parents,” has caused the decline of family time, and even undermines learning interest”.
Similarly, House Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero filed a separate House Bill (HB) No. 3611, which wants Kinder to Grade 12 students do their tasks only within school grounds and to remove homework as a mandatory requirement.
“Homework assignments can deprive students and parents [of]precious quality time for rest, relaxation, and interaction after schools hours and even on weekend,” Escudero noted.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) gives its utmost support for the proposal.
According to Secretary Leonor Briones, the policy will benefit learners to find balance between their academic advancement and personal growth and make time with their love ones.
