The Domain 3 of National Competency-Based Teachers Standards, the domain of Diversity of Learners, emphasizes the ideal that teachers can facilitate the learning process in diverse types of learners, by first recognizing and respecting individual differences, then using knowledge about students’ differences to design diverse sets of learning activities to ensure that all students can attain appropriate learning goals. This domain requires the teachers to be familiar with learners’ background knowledge and experiences and to demonstrate concern for holistic development of learners. These strands are the same as the characteristics of a global teacher. In order to design diverse sets of learning activities, we must possess the characteristics of a global teacher.
A heterogeneous classroom is one of the challenges a teacher must accept. It is a big challenge for the teachers to design teaching methods and learning activities for the students with different abilities and interests. In accepting this challenge, we must possess the following characteristics of a global teacher.
- A global teacher must know the students’ learning styles, multiple intelligences and needs of learners.
- A global teacher must know and integrate learning experiences suited to a group of different kinds of learners.
- A global teacher must engage students in learning lessons which are appropriate to the needs and difficulties of learners.
- A global teacher must use real-life situations, materials, and resources to prepare students and make a good batch of citizens for the next generation.
- A global teacher must recognize and value cultural and linguistic background of learners in providing learning opportunities.
- A global teacher must adopt teaching strategies to satisfy needs of students with different abilities.
- A global teacher must create a positive cross-cultural environment and model social responsibility.
- A global teacher must challenge learners to find appropriate actions to improve the next generation.
Be a global teacher in providing holistic development of different kinds of learners.
