It is very important that a teacher must employ the best practices in order to develop the reading skills of the learners since reading is instrumental in understanding a certain reading text.
A teacher should have an overview of the reading skill practices that should be considered by the teacher:
Consider the Phonics
Phonics is the initial step in teaching a child to read. Phonics teaches pupils to recognize the letter or sound relationship within the alphabet and to combine those letters and sounds together to create words. The best sequence of action is to begin with the short-sound vowels for the learners.
Introduce Sight Words
It is also a good idea to introduce sight words before the class regularly. Sight words are basic words that will help the learners practice the reading ability. They are simple words though only plain but can create an impact to the readers.
Increase One’sVocabulary
The young onesare susceptible to learning new things each and every day. This can also be in the acquisition of words. It is a better time to increase their vocabulary, which can be done in a variety of ways. The simplest way is to do it in the classroom. Exposing the children to new words on a regular basis is effective.
Follow the Rules in Punctuation
To be good readers, the pupils must understand basic sentence structure and use the correct punctuations. Sentences always begin with a capital letter and end with some form of punctuation. Use appropriate punctuations that suit the sentence.
Be Acquainted with the Parts of a Book
Before the pupil begins reading a book, point out the important parts of it such as the cover, title, body and other significant parts..
Attain Accuracy
It is time to focus on correctness. Listen well to determine if your child is reading words correctly, using proper pronunciation and following the punctuations. Correct at once the mistakes of the child for him/her to be well-guided.
Practice Fluency/Speed
The child must develop fluency and speed. The teacher should watch out for the articulation of the way he/she speaks and reads, and monitor their speed for clarity.
Emphasize Expression
There should be a presence of feelings. The child should not only read but also identify the feelings in the content. Be well-informed of the sentiments that the texts convey for effectiveness.
Develop Comprehension
The child should understand what he/she reads. He/she should be able to know the essence of the passage or story. It is the best way of developing a good reader.
Have Prediction
Encourage the child to make use of their imagination. Predicting future events after reading a text or story can create one’s creativity.
