Music is the language of the soul. This is what we have always believe. If there is one thing in life that can be counted as a ‘need’, I believe music would pass as such. Without music, life is boring. Without the beat of instruments or just the music produced by mouth, hands, or feet, life would be a complete tragedy: no soul, no heart. This is one of the most important reasons why we maintain music in the secondary school curriculum: music is what makes us human. With that, and with the apparent complaints of teachers regarding the misbehaviors of our digital generation of students who are also describe as ‘heartless’, ‘ruthless’, young people, music is an effective antidote. It is a way to the heart of our students.
Am I proposing for including music in core subject areas such as mathematics and science? Why not! Creative individuals as we should always be as teachers, why not try to ‘sing’ your lessons to your students. Can we sing numbers? Of course we can! We did that in kindergarten and even in primary years! Can we sing biology and physics? Indeed. Remember the mnemonics we used to sing to memorize the planets of the solar system? Here is what I am trying to encourage to my fellow teachers, mentors, nation builders, and second parents. Other than the literal inclusion of music in our classrooms, let our teaching sound like music to the ears of our students – let it be encouraging, moving, ‘singable’ or understandable.
I believe we can create music more than just singing our lessons. Let us capture the hearts of our students through music. Through music, we understand each other. For only through the language of the heart, that we can create transformation in the lives of our students.
