Teachers bid good bye to KPUP Grading System as the Department of Education Secretary, Br. Armin Luistro, FSC, announces the implementation of the new K-12 Grading System which will include fewer components namely WW (written work), PT (performance task), and QA (quarterly assessment). This new facet of the K-12 program will use a ‘’standards and competency-based grading system” which highlights classroom assessment as “an integral part of curriculum implementation.”

“In 2012, the grading system implemented by DepEd became controversial with parents and students complaining about its “accuracy.” Instead of the traditional numerical values, the grades on the report cards of students appeared as letters as per DepEd Order No. 31 Series of 2012 or “Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of Grades 1 to 12 Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) Effective School Year 2012-2013.”

Effective school year 2015-2016, all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide will implement the new K-12 grading system which will use numerical grades to assess and rate the learners’ learning outcome. Hence, the minimum grade that a learner needs to acquire in order to pass a specific learning area is 60 which is transmuted to 75 in the report card. The lowest mark, therefore, that can appear on the report card is 60 for Quarterly Grades and Final Grades.
