DEVELOPING A PROBLEM – SOLVER STUDENT

Many students are afraid of problems especially in Mathematics because of difficulties they encounter.  Sometimes they feel anxiety due to lack of skills to approach, comprehend and deal with mathematical problems. The stated circumstance is one of the reasons why some students lose interest in Math which results to poor performance.

To face this dilemma, teachers should develop problem – solver students equipped with the necessary skills and enhance the students’ critical analysis that would help them to breakdown even complex problems.

Here are some suggested activities/strategies that would help improve and develop the students’ problem solving skills:

  1. In giving a problem, be sure that the student did not experience or encounter it already.
  2. The problem to be given is within the level of the learner.
  3. Let the student/s (as much as possible by group) find ways on their own to solve the given problem.
  4. The teacher will act only as a facilitator of learning.
  5. The facilitator will use an inquiry – based method and/or discovery strategy.
  6. Let the student communicate the result or answer by means of reporting/explaining it on the front of the class.
  7. Give supplementary activities related to previous problem for mastery purposes.

Once a problem was answered by the student/s on his/their own, the knowledge learned is deeper and will serve as a basis to face a more challenging one. Student – centered problem solving activities are also effective in boosting the students’ confidence toward Mathematics. It allows students to study problems thoroughly and creatively. Thus, learning becomes more interactive and enjoyable.

Furthermore, a problem – solver student is not only trained to answer the problem given by the teacher or written on the books but also   equipped with the necessary skills and courage to face the real – life situations.
