In all subject areas that students study in the school, it becomes imperative for them to develop good study habits.

Good study habits, as teachers should know, help a good deal to students’ easy and fast learning of any given subject.

The harmonious relationship between teachers and parents leads to a healthier condition in the development of the child. When it comes to the study habits of children, we both agree that these don’t come naturally. These should be taught and reinforced at home as well as at school. Both parents and teachers can help a child to develop good study skills. The following are ways to enhance good study habits of the children:

  • Select a place for homework. Children will be more motivated if they have an area to study at home. Most kids would like to work in the privacy of their own room. Keep the place empty of destruction and provide necessary supplies prior to child’s need in doing related works.
  • Designate a specific time for homework and studying. Teach a kid to avoid “cramming”. If he has already done his assignments, teach him to use the extra time to review other work during that time.
  • Encourage pupils to take notes while reading. It is important to differentiate between reading for enjoyment and purposeful reading. Taking notes can help pupils to make connections.
  • Be involved. Parents should know the assignments that their child has and when he/ she has a test. To make sure that the child understands the concepts, try to quiz him/her on a nightly basis.

These are only some of the ways to develop good study habits. Teachers should never fail to encourage pupils to have a positive attitude towards their studies while parents should make sure that their child can always come to them to ask for help with anything that is giving him/her trouble.
