As stipulated in Deped Order # 31, s 2012, otherwise known as Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of Grade 1 to 10 of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) effective school year 2012 – 2013, the teaching of Physical Education and health promotes the development of effective and healthy lifestyle. Physical Education focuses on five strands namely: Body management, movement skills, game and sports, rhythm and dance and physical fitness. Each strand is sequentially developed across grade levels including the activities that are varied and age-appropriate to address the needs and interest of the learners. With this aims of Deped in carrying out the objectives of teaching Physical Education based on its description, teachers must evaluate themselves on the paradigm of the question “How well I am in Teaching Physical Education?” Performance assessment is a way to document and evaluate the work of both teachers and students. Evaluating one’s teaching is one way to improve one’s performance. Teachers must employ the following methods of evaluating themselves on how they fare in making learners to be interested on what they are teaching.
- Videotaping
This is one way to view and listen to the class as your students do; you can observe your students reactions and responses to your teaching. You can also check the accuracy of your perception of how well you teach and identify those techniques that work and those that need improvement. This informal recording the teacher can be useful and effective. An experienced evaluator can help you focus on the aspects of teaching that influence effectiveness. As you watch the tape to analyze your classroom interaction with students, you may ask yourself these questions: Did I give the purpose of the session? Did I emphasized or restate the most important ideas? Did I make transition to one topic to another? Did I summarize the main point? And Did I begin and end the class promptly?
- Peer Evaluation:
Peer review of one’s teaching is a standard practice in all subject areas for advancing one’s teaching knowledge anf skills. Reciprocal classroom visits, mentoring programs for new faculty, team teaching and departmental seminars about teaching and learning are, but few of the ways that faculty member’s work with colleagues to improve teaching. Mentoring is also a Deped program to help teachers in their teaching problems.
- Student’s Evaluation
The most common way to evaluate a subject and a faculty member’s teaching is use a student’s rating form at the end of the school year. The teacher can learn many things from the student’s evaluation.
There are still many simple and accurate ways that a teacher can assess her own teaching Physical education subjects or any subjects. But one thing is certain, that as years go by, the experience, wisdom and human relation that a teacher learns and acquire will make him/ herif not the best teacher.
