Leaning Mathematics can be disappointing for both early learners and for secondary school students. Mathematics seems to be a dreaded subject for them not only because of confusing symbols, letters and formula. But oftentimes, teachers’ factors also pitched in and the approaches and strategies they use in teaching this subject.

As stipulated in DepEd Order # 31 s 2012, otherwise known as Implementing Guidelines on the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum of 2012, the goals of Mathematics instruction is for the students to demonstrate skills in understanding in computing with understandable speed and accuracy, estimating, communicating, thinking analytically and critically, and in solving problems in daily life using appropriate technology. These goals may be far from achieving it if problems on students’ low achievement in Mathematics continue to exist.

Teachers of Math should be more creative in using different approaches and strategies in teaching so that students will not underachieve in this subject. A Math teacher may apply the following:

  • Mindset your students that anybody who works hard in Math can avoid fear of this subject and later on succeed.
  • Make ways for students to be persistent and enthusiastic to improve their math achievement.
  • Apply appropriate lessons, schedule and time management for the level of students will help increase students’ performance.
  • You may use Pre-Test and PostTest to determine their Math standing. Teachers will know where to begin.
  • Always observe, analyze individual students’ performance. Observation and assessment will help students in coping in Math.
  • Allow students to engage in asking questions and discussions. Students may lessen fear of this subject and may achieve real learning.\
  • Always see to it that problems to be solved by students should be based in real life situations.

Finally, always have a self-reflection about the performance of the students, their progress, development and achievement. Ask yourselves which strategies have a great impact to students at the same time; also analyze methods, styles on approaches that made them excited.
