Achievements of students in mathematics is a very significant indicator of the quality of Math teaching in a country’s education system. Teachers of Mathematics should give extra effort so that the students will not be bored inside a Math classroom. This situation may be blamed in a way to teacher factor; most probably, the teaching styles of the teacher do not fit the enthusiasm and interest of the students.
It is alarming to know that the students who lack basic knowledge in math may want to give up even before they finish their high school years. Being aware of this situation, teachers must provide an environment that will be beneficial to students learning and achievement.
Students have their own learning styles; equally, teachers have their own teaching styles. Among the teaching styles of teachers are:
- Authoritative teaching style – the teacher seems to be an all-knowing teacher, she has the monopoly of the discussion and the classroom. She has a mastery of the concept, tasks and skills of the lesson.
- Submissive teaching style – this teacher applies freedom in the Math classroom. She allows students to discuss, analyze, and pitch-in in an on-going discussion. He/she is not so strict in the classroom, allowing students to express themselves.
- Facilitative teaching style – the teacher makes ways like using appropriate strategies and approaches to simply the lesson. She patiently assists students to be engaged in the classroom discussion and interaction.
There are still other teaching styles used by teachers; nevertheless, teachers must be aware of their own styles. Are these teaching styles help students or they even make the lessons complicated for the students? They must remember that they inculcate great influence to the growth and development of students.
