Parents are the first people to guide their children. The family is their home. Teachers, then and now, are still referred as the second guardians of the learners, whether inside or outside the classroom environment. Like any other individual, a student suffers from physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health when there are sensitive cases that inflict them. The question is, how will a teacher know the problem of the student before prescribing psychosocial remedies? The answer is simple, do a home visitation.
Below are the following guidelines that should be fathomed to visit a student who shows complicated behavior:
- Educators must not judge a student who always commits absences. The very first thing to do is to know what has been going on. A child might be offended if he or she is directly scolded in front of the class.
- Review yourself with the principles of teaching and learning. Find out the real reason why students manifest unwanted behaviors, may it be inside or outside the class.
- Do not hesitate to warn the student of his violations. A caveat is a good point before any other reinforcements.
- After the warning, make a letter addressed to the parent of the student who keeps on misbehaving or absenting. You may also send message or call the guardian if you have the phone number.
- Talk to the student in private. Ask him without embarrassment, and don’t make it too personal on your side.
- If no response comes, or if the student does not go to school for consecutive days, it is time to plan about the home visitation.
- Choose an appropriate time for the visitation. Make sure that a parent is present to talk personally.
- Ask proper questions and be polite and courteous. Never mention anything bad about the student to the extent that you are already defaming the child. It is not an act of a professional teacher.
- Encourage the parent to counsel the student in a nice way. Most of the time, all they need is love and attention.
- Lastly, motivate the student to go back to school or to keep a good attitude for his own betterment. Be sure that you treat your student like your own son or daughter. Make the student feel that he or she is loved.
Home visitation is an essential key. Do not ever underestimate little things that result to big solutions. No student wants to be bad intentionally. It is their environment that shapes them, so be one of the good environments that will make the students believe that they can make a big difference.
