Many school learners find Mathematics as a nut that is hard to crack. Having the perception in mind, the anxiety over the subject grows which oftentimes turns out into failures. The most common joke in conversations when it comes to Math goes like this, “Ask me of anything except Math!”

The behavioral pattern has created a chain of belief among students that math lessons are pathetic and as a defensive mechanism they play it up as simply boring.  It can be taken as funny or absurd at the most. With this in mind, the objective of the K to 12 Curriculum which is being implemented by the Department of Education is holding its ground to change the perception of learners in their study of Mathematics.

In its context, the Curriculum enables the cognizance of the subject in terms of the set of conditions which are common to Filipino learners that may influence their study and use of mathematics to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. The context refers to beliefs, environment, language and culture which include traditions and practices, as well as the learner’s prior knowledge and experiences.

Taken as a collective whole, the context embodies the need of students to take interest in learning more about the subject. The orientation of the program only solid but concrete in meeting the desired objective wherein students can feel at home in going through with their lessons.

In general the broad spectrum presents the reality that Mathematics is part of our lives. In a deeper perspective as a culture it is a way of life. Students must realize that in every walk they take and in every talk they make, math is always involved right wherever they are. Precise, accurate, and interesting is the statement which emphasizes that nobody can do without the knowledge of Mathematics.

Let no learner put the importance of math in a box, the K to 12 Curriculum package is a blessing not meant for keeping but a wonder needing to be explored to the hilt.
