Our country is looking forward  for  a   better educational system that will suit the needs

of each learner in the learning process and  in  the learning    environment.  An education that

focuses on the implementation of  a  curriculum  for the welfare of the students; for the

enhancement of academics as well as the teaching – learning techniques, and  for a well sounded

learning area.

The   implementation   of   the    K – 12   educational system  in   the Philippines

provides    great    opportunity  among our students  including those  with  disabilities, in the

sense that,  they  are   given  the   chance   in coping  up in  this  changing  world.  As stated

in Article I, Section I: “The state shall promote the right of every individual to relevant quality

education regardless of sex, age, creed, socio economic status, physical and mental condition,

social or ethnic, origin, political and other affiliation.  The state shall therefore promote and

maintain equality of access to education as well as the enjoyment of the benefits of education

by all its citizens.”

Special Education Programis designed for those students who are mentally, physically,

socially and/or emotionally delayed. “A cluster of resources-specialists teachers, teacher aides-

at a particular school…dedicated to supporting the educational needs of students with disability

to access, participate and achieve at school.” In Article I, Section IV: “The ultimate goal of

special education shall be the integration  or  mainstreaming  of  learners  with  special needs

into the regular school system and eventually into the community.”

The implication of K-12 curriculum on the quality of education is to create a functional

basic education system that will produce productive and responsible citizens equipped with the

essential competencies and skills for both life-long learning and employment.  And to provide

every student an opportunity to receive quality education based on an enhanced and decongested

curriculum that is internationally recognized and comparable.

Moreover, even  this innovation in the curriculum is not just as simple  to  accept for it is

new to all of us, but if the main goal of this change would benefit the learners as well as the entire

body in the educational system, and most importantly towards nation’s progress, then it is

significant that we have to support this transformations  in  the   field of education.  Hence, an

education that  aims for the betterment of the students including those with disabilities.
