Cultural literacy emphasizes that true literacy is far more than a skill . It is content as well , for it requires a background of shared , take-for-granted information about significant people, events, places , ideas and other cultural matters for effective interaction and communication among people .
This study is aimed to identify the specific contest of cultural literacy in so far as the humanities are concerned . It surveys the perceptions of teachers and parents of preschool and Grade I children in highly urban and rural settings on what they considered essential to include in preschool curriculum .
The Contest Analysis of Grade 1 Textbooks reveal very few cultural literacy indicators . Philippine schools appear not to be teaching enough knowledge to develop cultural literacy . Schools put greater emphasis on reading skills and processes instead of striking a balance between how children learn and what they learn .
The result of the survey indicated a very close agreement between parents’ perceptions about preschoolers’ attainment of both content , knowledge and skills .
It becomes imperative to know , therefore , what every Filipino Child needs to know .
