It is not new that high school students fear mathematics as a subject. In fact, most teachers find conflicts in encouraging and motivating students inside the math classroom. These conflicts exist because of various reasons. But these conflicts can be solved if we help the students to have a mastery of basic concepts and skills from elementary mathematics.
Let’s go back to the basic. Yes, it may be time-consuming, but it will help the students to learn and understand higher mathematics fast if they already mastered basic concepts. Help them to master basic math concepts and skills. Bring them back in easier topics from their elementary mathematics. Encourage and help the students to have mastery of pre-requisite skills.
Let them have practice, practice and have more practice. Students’ long-retention of learning is also a big challenge for the teachers. Teachers must give drills and worksheets for the students. Repetition of activities will help students acquire the long-retention of learning. So, provide them drills and worksheets as an extended or enrichment activity.
Let them see their own errors. Help them understand where they went wrong. Mistakes make students learn. Other books suggest activities wherein it requires learners to identify errors on a certain solution and let them correct them. If they were able to correct mistakes, then they are able to understand the concept.
Make sure your classroom is free from distraction. They should have focus and attention in the lesson. Every step and concept in mathematics is important. They should not miss even the smallest detail.
Connect math to real-life situations. Provide real-life scenarios wherein it requires math concepts to solve the problem. Emphasize that the mathematical skills can be applied in real-life.
Gaining mastery in basic mathematical skills will help students to develop self-efficacy and positive mind set in learning higher mathematics. If they already have mastery, they don’t have to be anxious in the subject matter.
