A rich, old man wanted to see his daughter get married so he could bequeath his estate before his death. The problem was that his unica hija neither had a boyfriend nor a suitor.
The anxious father, determined to find the perfect match for his daughter, decided to hold a competition for bachelors. He had posters printed and posted all over town.
Part of the poster read:
Whoever wins the competition will have a chance to choose any of the following prizes:
10 million pesos
10 hectares of land
Or a chance to marry my only daughter
On the day of the competition, men of all kinds, shapes and sizes came. Mayroong matanda, mayroong bata.Mayroong matangkad, mayroong pandak.Mayroong mataba, mayroong payat. Mayroong guwapo, at mayroong mas guwapo.
Listen! The wealthy father shouted. “Whoever crosses this pond from that end may choose one of the prizes indicated in the poster.” The men roared with excitement and wanted to plunge into the pond right away. As they were about to jump, the old man made a startling announcement.
“Wait! Let me warn you that this is an unusual pond! It has different kinds of dangerous animals, such as piranhas, crocodiles and snakes!” Everyone’s excitement quickly turned into a shocked silence. One by one, the men retreated. “The prizes are so attractive, “a man told his companion, “pero patay naman tayo!”
As everyone stood still, suddenly, out of nowhere, a man jumped into the pond! Instantly, crocodiles, snakes and piranhas rushed toward the man, so he swam for his life!
There was a roaring noise all over. Some were cheering the man on for his bravery, saying, “Kaya mo ‘yan!” while others shouted teasingly, “Sige, pakamatay ka riyan!” To everyone’s utter surprise, the man was able to cross the pond and reach the other end safely! Though still in shock, the rich, old man was elated that a fearless man took up the challenge.
Looking at the man who made it to the other side of the pond, he called out, “Kaibigan! Ano ang gusto mong premyo?” The man did not answer as he was still catching his breath. But the old man was so excited to know what the man would choose for his reward so he asked, “Gusto mo bang 10 milyong piso?” The man responded, “Hindi po!”
The old man asked, “Gusto mo bang 10 hektarya ng lupa?” The man replied, “Hindi rin po!” “Oh, great!”The old man thought to himself. “Finally,I’ve found a husband for my only daughter” So he asked, “Gusto mo bang mapangasawa ang anak ko?” To everyone’s surprise, the man answered loud and clear, “Hindi po!”
Feeling shocked and insulted, the old man angrily said, “You don’t want the money nor the 10-hectare land, and now your rejecting my offer to marry my daughter?!” Finally he asked, “ano ba ang gusto mo?”
Catching his breath, the man replied, “Gusto ko lamang pong malaman kung sino ang nagtulak sa akin!”
(Unleash Your Highest Potential)
