Reading is fun, also a magic key for enlightenment and enjoyment. It is the basic tool for learning in all subject areas. It is a complex process. One of the problems encountered by teachers teaching in English is the poor performance of pupils in reading. It involves comprehension which our pupils find difficult time in answering the questions after reading the texts. After administration of pre-test during the first semesters, teachers know already who needs guidance. Remedial reading is required for those pupils who are slow readers.
Slow readers are the students in a regular classroom setting who find it difficult to cope with studying because of their slow learning pace and language deficits in gaining cognitive skills from the prescribed curriculum. Many slow learners suffer from a feeling of learned helplessness, which occurs when children convince themselves that will not be successful and therefore stop trying.
The teacher adviser should be resourceful and innovative to find ways or strategies on how to improve and strengthen the reading abilities of pupils. As teacher we have a great deal of influence on our pupils. Begin by setting up a meeting with your child’s parent, tell them that you want to give the child extra help and give some reading materials and enrichment which can use at home. Let’s inculcate in the minds of our pupils to read always at least a page daily. Being a good if not the best reader is a pride on our pupils and fulfillment for us teacher for giving our best in teaching and sharing our knowledge to our beloved pupils.
