One of the most challenging aspects of becoming a teacher is learning how to motivate learners. Since it is an important factor for pupils to learn, educators should give emphasis on it by all means. Pupils who are not well-motivated will not learn effectively. There will be no retention and participation on their part.
There are many factors that affect pupils learning like lack of interest in the subject matter, distraction of external forces, difficulty in learning and need of special attention, insufficient learning tools and economic status. In spite of these hindrances, a great teacher who has a big heart can make learning more enjoyable and can inspire them to reach their full potential.
Here are some of the ways that can help motivate students.
First, create a classroom conducive to learning. Provide useful and relevant learning experiences. Promote an open communication and establish a good rapport among them. Be creative in classroom structure. Make the pupils feel comfortable.
Second, involve the learners in doing different tasks to foster their sense of responsibility. Allow them to work together as a group. Facilitate their exploration.
Third, appreciate students’ effort and hard work by giving rewards or incentives. Praise them for an accomplished task or a job well done. Through these, they will not be afraid of participating.
Fourth, be flexible. D o not allow the insufficiency of the learning materials hinder along the way. Come up with different games and make them excited to answer.
Fifth, be realistic. Let the teaching-learning process be applied to real life situations. Instill in them the importance of education. Emphasize on the practical knowledge.
Sixth, add suspense and humor. A happy classroom environment attracts positive vibes. Humor would work great even with the most unmotivated learners. Add element of surprise to keep them listening.
Last but not the least, be respectful. Be aware of students’ emotions. Find time listening to their stories and suggestions. Show them you care.
