TEACHER PERSPECTIVE IN THE K TO 12 CURRICULUM

According to the definition of K to 12 curriculum by the official gazette,” the k to 12 program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of senior High School (SHS) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship”. The implementation of the program started SY 2012-2013 for public schools. Grade 1 entrants in SY 2012-2013 are the first batch to fully undergo the program, and current first year Junior High School students are the first to undergo the enhanced secondary education program. To facilitate the transition from the existing 10-year basic education to 12 years, Department of Education is also implementing the Senior High School and Senior High School Modeling. Based from this article from the internet, I can say that our government has a good plan for our students. They have viewed our students as a better citizen when they graduated the Senior High School. They are equipped with the necessary learning they need in order for them to survive. The k to 12 curriculum will help the students to get a job easier after they had their diploma. It is a simple way of the government to help the people to have a better way of living after their study. Does it really help the students to study better with the new curriculum? With this curriculum, students will undergo to Junior High School with the basic learning and go to the higher learning in the Senior High School. In the last part of the learning, the students will choose for their major subjects in preparation for their college life. The students will be guided according to the interest and ability of their study. It can promote with a better understanding of what the students really needs to help them in their undergraduate. For me as a teacher, it will lead the students to have an overview with what to expect after the Senior High School. It helps the students to decide what course they should take up base from their interest. This curriculum will allow the students to appreciate the talents and abilities they have during their Junior High school and continue it to the next level of understanding. As a whole, we can only determine the result of this new curriculum when the first batch ended it with a complete knowledge and skills they acquired during the said curriculum. Only the students can determine if the curriculum can help the other students in surviving in the college life. We as a teacher can help them to appreciate the curriculum by making the lesson interesting and impart it in an easy way. K to 12 curriculum is one way on how our department think about the welfare of our future learners. We should support it in order for it to become a successful curriculum with the full benefits of the students.
