According to research, classroom management is often referred to as the first aspect of teaching that an educator must grasp in order to deliver the best, and most effective instruction. Every teacher is held to the same standard for teaching the curriculum and keeping students safe. However, teachers have differing styles through which they use to obtain these standards.
There are four styles of classroom management in teaching; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and indulgent. They range from the teacher having very strong control and less student involvement to the teacher having less control and more student involvement. It can also be described as teacher-centered having deductive method and student-centered having inductive method.
4 Styles of Classroom Management:
- Authoritarian- in this style of classroom management, the teacher is having the total control over the classroom.
- Authoritative- in this style of classroom management, there is a balance between student involvement and teacher control.
- Permissive- in this style of classroom management, it has a low level of involvement of the students and the control of the teacher.
- Indulgent- in this style of classroom management, there is a low level of control of the teacher but high level of involvement of the students.
As a teacher, what is the best classroom management style?
Selecting the best classroom management is one of the serious matters in a classroom set-up. It is a trial-and-error process for the teacher, thinking of what would be the possible and best classroom management style that suits of learner’s need. Having a different sections and different abilities, talents, experiences and skills of every student, it is the most crucial part by the teacher. Once the instructor chose the best classroom management style he executes, he must stand and maintain it during the learning process for it to become effective and efficient. And as a mentor and leader of educational wheel you must first know the needs of your students and learners. Most of the educator believes in the saying, “A teacher’s success is measured by the success of his/her students”. Teacher is the noblest profession of all and has a great part of learner’s life, development and growth. Therefore, there must be organized, effective and creative interactions in a classroom environment in order for students to succeed. In everything that we do there must be balance for involvement.
Being a teacher is just like a parent, they constantly think what’s the best for their students and children. It is not always finding the way what is the best parenting/teaching styles but also prioritizing the students’ learning in the end of the lesson, the progress and outcome of the learners. If that happened, you could now probably say that you had the best styles, classroom management, and best teaching strategies and techniques. Moreover, it can be said and describe you that you’re an effective and efficient mentor.
