Back in the days there were no grade 11 & 12, once you have graduated from 4th year high school, a student can apply for college. For whatever course he or she may want to take for as long as that individual passed their entrance examination & initial screenings, it will not be an issue entering tertiary level. The nightmare starts when the person comes from a high school that does not offer higher mathematics and science subject and then eventually took up courses in college which requires knowledge in Calculus and the likes. There are pessimistic effects that the pupil might face if one does not acquire proper knowledge in such subjects beforehand.
If the student does not have the ability to absorbed Math lessons in a short period of time, then there will be a chance of failing the subjects during early years of the course. Hence, if the student were already exposed to these topics earlier, a possibility of passing such subject would be evident. Secondly, it will be longer for the student to finish such courses due to early retakes or back subjects. The worst part is that, the more subject a student fails in a semester, the higher percentage of being kicked out of the school. For the third effect, is about the financial aspect of the situation. Retaking subjects means paying double or more for that same subject which will hurt eventually the budget of the family. If the source of fund for that education could not afford retaking the subjects all over again, then the student might be asked to stop & seek early job hunting. Lastly, all the efforts exerted during college will be wasted if the pupil will eventually be kicked out or had to stop due to financial difficulties because of failing such subjects. Nevertheless, if the student is competitive enough, all the hard work and efforts is worth.
As for me, it is really important to have an early exposure to those calculus & other STEM subjects in order to combat all the unrewarding effects of it. Time, money and effort are gold nowadays, these should not be neglected or put into waste. The real world is very competitive especially at this time, so there’s no room for incompetent people.
